Bastrop, La. -

Sherry Campbell, wife of Bastrop Police Sergeant Allen Campbell, was given no bond for attempted first degree murder charges resulting from a fire at her home.

Jerry Spires, Sherry’s lawyer, waived the right to set a bond for her on Wednesday, Fourth Judicial District Attorney Jerry Jones said. “He reserved the right to have a bond at a later date.”

An arraignment for Sherry’s case is scheduled for September 16 in Bastrop. During the arraignment, Sherry will hear a formal reading of her charges. Sherry is expected to give a plea at this time. No one has commented on whether her plea would be guilty or not guilty.

Although officials have said Sherry admitted to setting the fire, she did not admit to trying to harm her husband.

Sherry allegedly attempted to burn her home down on Old Bonita Road in Bonita with Sgt. Campbell inside sleeping on August 17.

Sgt. Campbell had worked the graveyard shift and was sleeping, when Sherry left for church.

As she left her home, she claims to have seen smoke coming from her residence and went back to investigate. She said she attempted to get Sgt. Campbell out of the home but could not.

Firefighters and deputies arrived on the scene. They found Sgt. Campbell still asleep in the home and safely removed him.

The state Fire Marshal’s arson investigator Ric Abbott and Morehouse deputies investigated the fire to determine the cause and with the help of a K-9 found four areas where liquid accelerant had been used.

“After investigators looked at the scene, we determined it was arson. There was no doubt it was started intentionally,” arson supervisor Donald Carter said. “We obtained enough information to get a warrant. (Sherry) cooperated.”

Sherry has been in the Morehouse Parish Jail since August 21 and will remain without bond until her arraignment.
