Never underestimate the power of hope.
From its foundation, the Morehouse Cancer Fund has provided financial help -- and hope -- to countless cancer patients in the parish.
Saturday, the public is invited to share this mission in the Ride for Hope. The day promises family fun for the sake of a good cause.
Treasurer Marthann Yates said the nonprofit, volunteer-based Cancer Fund has helped 32 patients since January, and is helping more every day.
Leroy Turner was diagnosed with cancer in April.
“I didn’t even know about the Morehouse Cancer Fund before that,” he said. “I think it’s great. When I get back to work, I will be making my donation.”
Turner said the fund has helped with the expense of gas for his trips to Houston to receive treatment, in addition to helping with his house notes and utilities.
“It’s a very good organization,” he said. “They’ve helped me with everything. They will help you with anything you ask for.”
Helen Hardin said she was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and must visit St. Francis Medical Center every three months for testing.
“I’m still here, I’m a survivor,” she said. “I am blessed. The Cancer Fund has been great. They have helped me with transportation and utilities. They even bring me a basket at Christmas. They are truly good to me. I don’t know what I would do without them.”
The Ride for Hope fundraising event kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Motorcyclists and antique car enthusiasts are invited to register their vehicles at the Bastrop Municipal Center from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, before joining the ride throughout Morehouse Parish. At the same time, families can enjoy a softball game between the Bastrop police and fire departments at Carter Park. Concessions will be available, and there will be moonwalks for children.
Following both events, the Morehouse Cancer Fund will host a lunch with live entertainment at the Municipal Center. The event will culminate in a candle-lighting ceremony at 3:30, to honor those who have fought the battle against cancer and those who are still fighting the battle.
Registration for the Ride for Hope will be $25 per vehicle, with a lunch ticket and T-shirt included. The softball game will be $2 per person.
