Bastrop, La. -

Kilbourne teacher and coach resigns after accusations fly that she has been sending inappropriate messages to a 14 year old student.

Brittany Johnson, 26, has resigned as eighth grade English language arts teacher and girl’s basketball coach. She was accused in December 2008 of sending suggestive messages through MySpace to her male student.

West Carroll Parish Superintendent Kent Davis said, “she resigned Wednesday, [Jan. 14]. She felt it would be better for her family and the school.”

He said Fifth District Attorney William Coenen Jr. is looking over the files, and “hopefully, next week he will render his decision.”

Coenen said “we just started a few days ago. We are still reviewing [the case]. It’s really hard to tell [when we will come to a decision regarding Johnson].”

Before the schools let out for Christmas break, Davis, Johnson and Kilbourne High School principal Shelton Kavalier had a meeting about an investigation into these messages.

The results of the investigation were sent to West Carroll Sheriff Jerry Philley, who reviewed them and did a second investigation. He then sent his information to Coenen.

If convicted of sending illicit messages to the student, Johnson may be charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile.

This charge contains the “transmission of an electronic textual communication or an electronic visual communication depicting lewd or lascivious conduct, text, or images to any person reasonably believed to be under the age of 17 and reasonably believed to be at least two years younger than the offender.”

The electronic communications can include internet chat rooms, electronic mail or on-line messaging services.

This charge carries a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisoned with or without hard labor for not more than seven years, or both.

Johnson has taught seventh grade English and coached junior high basketball at Oak Grove High School. She attended Mississippi College, where she played basketball and majored in kinesiology with a minor in English. She met her husband while attending college, and they have one child together.
