Retired U.S. Sen. Bob Dole was among those who paid their respects to former President George H.W. Bush Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Dole, 95, has had a number of health issues in recent years and struggled to stand up from his wheelchair to salute Bush, his one-time political rival. An assistant helped keep Dole steady on his feet, according to video from C-SPAN.

Like Bush, Dole is a military veteran. Both served in World War II.

Even though they were competitors in 1988 for the Republican presidential primaries, with Bush ultimately coming out on top, the two remained friendly through the years.

Bush died Friday at the age of 94, just months after his lifelong sweetheart, wife Barbara, died.
