Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist Manager Ryan Daniel said that although Governor John Bel Edwards recently vetoed a construction project that was for Bussey Brake, it has not affected their ongoing project.
"We were not reliant on those funds," he said. "Our projects are fully-funded already by government grants. One of our legislators must have requested that bill a few years back, anticipating that we may need the funding."
Daniel said the completion for Bussey Brake should be around the beginning of next year or sooner if all goes according to plan.
"We are working on the two final projects now," he said. "The first project is the new fishing piers, boat ramp and the wave brake. We are almost done with the design phase of this project now."
Daniel said once the design phase is completed, there will be a 60-day bidding phase, and then the actual project can go under construction.
The other project is the broken pump. Daniel said the new pump is in the design phase and should be ready for bidding around July.
"Both projects are moving along well and are fully-funded," he said. "We are looking forward to reopening Bussey Brake again very soon."
