The Bastrop Police Department arrested a man yesterday who managed to escape custody before getting booked into jail.

Jaquarious Bennett, of 1318 Van Ave., was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with disturbing the peace by fighting, criminal damage to property and domestic abuse. He was in the custody of police in the parking lot of the Morehouse Parish Jail when he escaped during the transport and took off running.

Bastrop Police Chief Allen Campbell said the chase quickly ended in front of the Bastrop Daily Enterprise.

"He took off and before the gate could close he was out of the parking lot," he said. "The chase ended in the parking lot of West Hickory and South Washington."

Bennett also got an additional charge for simple escape and was booked into the Morehouse Parish Jail.
