Both community and school libraries have been a significant part of Bastrop for decades, and the city celebrated this with National Library Week April 4-10 in 1976.
The Morehouse Parish Library put out a new children and young adults book display and carried plastic book bags emblazoned with the phrase “libraries have it.” Staff, including librarian at the time, Anthony Benoit, wore t-shirts and buttons made for the occasion.
School libraries got in on the celebration as well. Prairie View Librarian Nellie Simmons allowed students to return overdue books on Wednesday, April 7 with no fines, and the Bastrop High School library held a drawing at which two free books were given to students and two to faculty members.
In holding these events Morehouse celebrated the libraries and librarians in our community and the importance of reading books.
