A Bastrop High student has been arrested for bringing a gun to school on Wednesday, Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office said.

The Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office and the Bastrop Police Department were contacted by school officials about a possible weapon at Bastrop High School at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Datavius R. Brooks, 17, 605 Todd St., was arrested at Bastrop High after police discovered a weapon in his backpack. He was charged with illegally carrying a weapon on school property and is currently being held at the Morehouse Parish Jail.

Sheriff Mike Tubbs said the gun contained no bullets, and he did not think Brooks had ill intent, but taking a gun to school is a very serious offense.

"It is a very serious issue to take a firearm to school property," he said.
