The last official business day of 2017 is Friday, Dec. 29, and administrators want to remind tax payers to pay their property taxes on time to avoid interest and late fees.

Jeff Winnon, Morehouse Parish Chief Civil Deputy, said the Civil Department office will remain open until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29.

"There is a grace period in the first week of January where no interest fees or late fees will be charged," he said.

But beginning Jan. 8, late fees and interest fees will begin to accumulate.

According to Winnon, only 35 percent of property owners have paid their taxes to date.

Sheriff Mike Tubbs said the $13,289,724 collected by the Parish and City go to public and Parish entities such as the School Board, Police Jury, Sheriff's Office, Fire Protection Division, Fire Department and cemeteries.
