At last weeks meeting of the Mayor and Board of Alderman for the City of Bastrop Mayor Henry Cotton introduced a resolution to rename the East Madison Park in honor of Detectives John Smith and Chuck Wilson, the two Bastrop Police Detectives gunned down in August of 2007. That resolution was passed unanimously and plans are underway for a ceremony and ribbon cutting on the 10th Anniversary of the two young officers deaths, August 10th.

While a committee has been formed to work out the details of the observance of the 10th Anniversary of the officers death, and the renaming of the park to the Smith-Wilson Memorial Park, what is known is that a ceremony will be held to include a moment of silence at the time of the event, 1:35 P.M. on August 10th. Plans include a ribbon cutting at the park entrance to dedicate the park in honor of Smith and Wilson.

Detective Smith had served on the Bastrop Police Department for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and two children. Detective Wilson had served on the Bastrop Police Department for 11 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, brother, and sister.
