Ava Dejoie, Executive Director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, visited the Bastrop Workforce Development Office on Thursday. Dejoie visited with local elected officials as well as several people that are success stories for the local Workforce Development Office.

Dejoie was welcomed by Bastrop Mayor Henry Cotton and then talked with several of the office's local success stories. Those successful participants in the local office's Business and Career Solutions Center were Donald Snead, a truck driver with A.P. Supply, Michelle Roberson, a nurse at t. Francis Hospital and Gerald Houston, a current student at Delta Community College in their welding program.

"Everyone has challenging days in their careers, but days like this are so encouraging for me," Dejoie said. "It's humbling and inspiring to be with you all. It's the local folks that make this work. Big cities can learn a lot from smaller communities -- the way they wrap their arms around people."

Dejoie made the trip to Bastrop to visit a busy rural Business and Career Solutions Center and to learn about some of their success stories.

Dejoie told the successful participants, "It's hard because as you're going through training, the light bill still comes. But just know that you have a slew of people here pulling for you all."

As executive director, Dejoie is responsible for providing the strategic vision to enhance the growth of Louisiana’s economy and its workforce, by putting people to work in fulfilling, family-sustaining careers. The commission monitors employment, administers unemployment compensation and tax funds, provides training resources for employers and job-seekers and oversees worker compensation benefits. The LWC also gathers and supplies information on the labor market and occupational sectors in Louisiana.

Dejoie has more than 15 years of leadership experience in public administration and is passionate about finding solutions that make Louisiana an outstanding place in which to live, work and grow a business.

The LWC's mission statement is, "We put people to work in fulfilling, family-sustaining careers by unlocking their potential with our extensive resources."
