UPDATED, MONDAY, January 9

A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agent was shot early Saturday morning while conducting a traffic stop in the Perryville area of Morehouse Parish.

According to LDWF, Senior Agent Tyler Wheeler, 25, of Monroe, was conducting a traffic stop in the south bound lane of U.S. Highway 165, near the Hideaway Lounge at 2:06 A.M. During the stop, Wheeler, was shot multiple times. Another LDWF Agent and Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene and found Wheeler on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. After radioing in a distress call, the Agent and Deputies, provided medical assistance to Wheeler, while also securing the scene. Wheeler was stabilized at the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS), before being airlifted to LSU Health Shreveport Trauma Center for treatment.

By noon, Louisiana State Police (LSP), who are investigating the shooting, had two suspects in custody.

Louisiana State Police Detectives began investigating the shooting and evidence was quickly discovered that lead to the arrest of 31-year-old Amethyst Baird of Monroe, LA.  Baird was charged and booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on one count of Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer for the shooting of Agent Wheeler.  

Also, during the course of this investigation, it was discovered that 34-year-old Jeremy Gullette of Monroe, LA assisted Baird in this crime.  Gullette was charged and booked at the Ouachita Correctional Center on one count of Accessory After the Fact to Attempted 1st Degree Murder.

“I am very proud of the hard work and persistence of investigators to quickly identify and arrest these suspects,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “We continue to pray for Agent Wheeler as he recovers from this senseless assault.”

  According to Morehouse Parish Sheriff Mike Tubbs, the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Ouachita and Richland Parish Sheriff's Offices, while LSP is in charge of the investigation.

Wheeler's father, Darren Wheeler, posted to Facebook, that Wheeler suffered from 5 gun shot wounds. "Two of the wounds were in the arm, 1 in the upper shoulder, 1 in the jaw, 1 that hit in the left temple crossed to the right and went down". Wheeler's post also said, "He does have all of his motion and they said he can move everything on commands. They said that was very good. He even answered some questions but was still hazy on some things but overall is good."

Wheeler has been an LDWF agent for two and a half years and is married with one child.
