After spending three long years on the bench, Bastrop Lady Rams’ senior point guard Raven Doaty has finally gained a coveted part in the starting five.
Playing behind the likes of Kari Payton and Precious Carson in the Lady Rams’ backcourt, Doaty had a front row seat as Bastrop advaced to the Top 28 the past two years.
Having switched from shooting guard to point guard early in the year, Doaty is getting a chance to run the show as a senior.
“So many people were putting so much focus and pressure on Rosa (Bryant), we needed someone to take up the slack,” said Bastrop coach Emma Brooks, explaining the position changes for Doaty and Bryant. “If not, Rosa would have been trying to do it all.”
Thanks to her perimeter shooting skills, Doaty has evolved into an offensive threat.
“Raven understands that her role involves shooting the ball,” Brooks said. “She’s a pretty good outside shooter. She just has to take her time and plant her feet.”
Doaty is averaging 7 points and 4 assists for the Lady Rams.
It hasn’t always been easy, but Doaty is at last being rewarded for her perseverance.
“I admire Raven and Brianna (Alexander) for the way they stuck it out,” Brooks said. “They both showed a lot of heart.”
FIRST QUARTER
BDE: When did you start playing basketball?
Raven Doaty: Brianna (Alexander), Rosa (Bryant) and I all played together in the seventh grade. We had a pretty good team that year. Coach (Vashon) Hobbs was our coach.
BDE: What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of basketball?
Doaty: My favorite part is the drills during practice.
My least favorite part is running.
BDE: You had to wait your turn to play for three years. Was it worth the wait?
Doaty: It was a long wait, but I’m glad I stuck it out. Basketball is what I love to do, so it was worth the wait.
SECOND QUARTER
BDE: What did Monday night’s Senior Night game mean to you?
Doaty: I got to thinking about how I won’t be able to seem my teammates any more after the season is over, so it was kind of sad.
BDE: What improvements do the Lady Rams need to make in the playoffs?
Doaty: We need to build our confidence and improve our communication.
BDE: Why do you believe the Lady Rams make some noise in the playoffs?
