  • Ouachita scored on its first two possessions and came up with a defensive stop in the final minute to repel Bastrop 13-6 in the Ouachita Jamboree on Friday night.
Thirty seconds was all the time the Lions needed to get on the board.
Starting from its own 35 after receiving the opening kickoff, Ouachita was awarded five yards when the Rams jumped off sides. Cam Robinson covered the remaining 60 yards on the first play from scrimmage.
Bastrop moved into Ouachita territory at the 40 on Christian Doaty's 19-yard pass to Al Dowles Jr.
After losing 10 yards on first down, the drive stalled and the Rams eventually turned the ball over on downs at the 38.
From there, Ouachita embarked on a nine-play, 62-yard drive.
Bastrop contributed to the Lions' cause by jumping off sides three times. In fact, the Lions moved the chains without snapping the ball following back-to-back neutral zone infractions against the Rams to start the drive.
Two plays later, Robert Levingston's 22-yard burst advanced the Lions to the Bastrop 27.
On fourth-and-five from the 22, Levingston picked up nine yards, good for a fresh set of downs at the 13.
Yet another off sides penalty against the Rams on third-and-two gave the Lions another first down at the 2 and Garrett Heath punched it in from there. Jared Blake's extra point upped the margin to 13-0 with 6:25 to play in the first half.
Regaining control after bobbling the second half kickoff, Jerry Powell's 56-yard return put the Rams in business at the Ouachita 41.
Three running plays led to a first down at the 29, before a second down holding penalty defused the drive.
Taking over on downs at its own 27, Ouachita generated a first down on Charles Wright's 10-yard keeper before eventually punting.
Starting from its own 35 following Isaiah Graham's 13-yard punt return, the Rams marched 65 yards on six plays.
Doaty's 17-yard pass to Devin Brown on third-and-10 went for a first down at the Ouachita 48.
With the Rams facing third-and-10, once again, Doaty hooked up with Dowles, who eluded a couple of tacklers near the right sideline en route to a 48-yard TD reception. Bastrop's try for 2 went awry, but the visitors has trimmed the deficit to 13-6 midway through the second half.
Ouachita managed a pair of first downs on its final full series
Taking over at the 20 after the Lions punted for a touchback, the Rams soon crossed over into Ouachita territory as Powell reeled off consecutive 13-yard gains on a reception and a run and Dowles picked up eight yards.
Powell then carried for three yards, giving the Rams a first down at the 43.
Page 2 of 2 - Doaty's 18-yard toss to Brown was good for another first down at the 25 with slightly under a minute and a half remaining.
Ouachita's defense tightened up from there as the Rams next four plays resulted in a loss of two yards, a pair of incomplete passes and a 1-yard pass play.
Both teams open the regular season at home Friday night — the Rams vs. Huntington and the Lions vs. Richwood.
