New school zone hours are being issued for the city due to new start and end times for Morehouse Parish Schools.

According to Bastrop Police Chief Downey Black, schools on residential city streets, which include Morehouse Magnet, Bastrop High School and H.V.Adams, will have school zone hours set from 7 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. This means that drivers must exercise caution when driving by within these hours as well as follow the posted speed limit.

Schools on state highways, however, will have different school zone hours. There morning hours will begin 45 minutes before each school starts and end 15 minutes after. The afternoon times will be 15 minutes before school lets out and end 45 minutes after. Schools located on state highways include Morehouse Jr. High, Cherry Ridge, Delta Magnet, Oak Hill, Pine Grove and Beekman Charter. At Cherry Ridge, Oak Hill, and Pine Grove elementary schools, school starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. At Delta Magnet and Morehouse Jr. High, school starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 4:15 p.m.

Black said that they are working to get the signs changed to reflect the new hours and that police will be out enforcing the new school zone times.
