  • In its first action against an opposing team, Sterlington will entertain St. Frederick and Cedar Creek in a three-way scrimmage on Friday, starting at 6 p.m.
Each school will get 20 reps with its first offense and defense and 16 reps with its second team units. Following the scripted portion of the scrimmage, the three teams will play two 12-minute quarters (running clock) under a round robin format.
Coach Jason Thompson says the Panthers have multiple positions up for grabs going into the scrimmage.
“We haven't settled on a depth chart,” Thompson said. “After the scrimmage, we'll post our first one. A lot of things will start to fall in place after the scrimmage.”
Thompson says it's time for the Panthers to line up against another team.
“We've been banging and grinding against each other for going on two weeks,” Thompson said. “Double that with the first hot spell we've really had all year and I think we're ready to see another colored jersey.”
Thompson says he has been pleased with several aspects of the Panthers' preseason camp.
“Generally speaking, I like the speed we have on defense,” said Thompson, the Panthers' second-year head coach. “We're not very big, but I like our team speed. We're a lot further along in that aspect than we were last year.
“Secondly, they're coachable. They're a fun bunch to coach.”
Thompson also had high praise for the scout team.
“Both scout teams did a great job today,” Thompson said following Tuesday's practice. “They gave us a great look.
“Last year, when we tried to break up and do some work with the scout team, it just wasn't real good. There was such a dropoff, we weren't getting what we needed. We have a little depth in places that allows us to get better work this year.”
On Thursday (Aug. 28), the Panthers travel to Delhi Charter for jamboree action, followed by the regular season opener at Benton on Friday, Sept. 5.
