Bastrop at Alexandria Senior High (scrimmage), 6:30 p.m.

Bastrop unofficially kicks off the 2014 football season Friday night at Alexandria Senior High. Starting time for the scrimmage is 6:30 p.m. on the Trojans' game field (the two teams scrimmaged on ASH's practice field in 2012).

Both teams will be allotted two 10-play series with their first offense and two eight-play series with the second unit, starting from their own 30.

In the second segment, the starting offenses will set up at midfield for an eight-play series, followed by a six-play series for the second team.

Finishing out the evening, the two teams will line up for a 15-minute quarter.

“It should be some pretty good work,” Bastrop coach Thomas Bachman said.

Bastrop is seeking to bounce back from a 3-8 2013 campaign, its first losing season since 1996.

“Hopefully this is the beginning of the process of getting some of the bad taste out of our mouths from last year,” Bachman said.

For ASH, the outing marks its first appearance under new coach Sam Goodwin, the former Northwestern State University head coach (1983-99).

“I know their quarterback is a big, tall kid who can throw it,” Bachman said. “Other than that, I can't say that I know a whole lot about them.”

At this stage, Bachman's focus is on his own team rather than the opposition.

“We're concentrating on the process of refining ourselves,” Bachman said. “I tell the kids all the time, 'perfect your craft.'”

Nevertheless, Bachman says the Rams are ready to line up against someone other than themselves.

“It will be refreshing to go up against somebody else,” Bachman said.

Bastrop travels to Ouachita for jamboree action next Friday before opening the season at home vs. Shreveport Huntington on Friday, Sept. 5.

“We started school (Wednesday),” Bachman said. “I think the kids are looking forward to getting back into the structure of game week. It's only 15 days until kickoff.”
