Cherry Ridge Skilled Nursing Facility's Marketing Liaison Teri Lee completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Tuesday morning in the hopes of encouraging other local businesses to accept the challenge to raise money for the ALS Association.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a viral movement created to spread awareness about Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons caused by the disease leads to loss of muscle movement, paralysis and death. The ALS Association was formed in 1985 as a nonprofit organization with the purpose of leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people suffering from the disease, coordinating care through certified clinical care centers and fostering government partnerships.

“This challenge is as important to me as Relay for Life and Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” Lee said. “It's another effort to help stomp out a disease that affects so many people and their families.”

To complete the challenge, participants have a bucket of ice water poured over their heads while someone captures it on video. That video is then uploaded to social media with the hashtags #icebucketchallenge, #alsicebucketchallenge and #strikeoutals. The participant can also nominate others to complete the challenge. Those who don't want to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to an ALS charity of their choice.

Lee challenged her co-workers at Cherry Ridge and their sister companies Lagniappe Skilled Nursing Facility, Premier Hospice and TruCare Home Health.

Donations to the ALS Association can be made online, by mail or by calling 888.949.2577. The online form and mail-in form as well as additional information can be found at

A recent press release by the organization notes that as of Tuesday, Aug. 19, the association has received $22.9 million in donations compared to $1.9 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 19).
