  • Hunter Carpenter barged into the endzone from one yard out with less than a minute to play as Prairie View clipped Claiborne 12-8 Friday night in jamboree action at Dr. E.D. Baker Field.
Leading 8-6, Claiborne drove from its own 37 to the Prairie View 15 before Cole Bryan picked off a second down pass. Both teams were assessed offsetting personal fouls at the end of the play but the Spartans maintained possession at their own 19 with just over four minutes to play.
Prairie View quickly moved into Claiborne territory at the 37 as Lucas Crockett completed three straight passes to Carpenter for 14 yards, to Cole Bryan for 17 and Carpenter again for 13.
Overcoming an offensive pass interference penalty, the Spartans converted on third-and-24 when Crockett found Bryan for 25 yards and a fresh set of downs at the 26.
Crockett ran four straight times for 15 yards before having the wind knocked out of him.
With Crockett on the sideline, Carpenter finished the drive at quarterback. Running three straight keepers, Carpenter crashed over from the 1-yardline.
Two plays later, Bryan sealed the victory with his second interception.
Starting the game on offense, the Spartans covered 70 yards on eight plays to grab the early lead.
Bryan's 35-yard reception on the first snap of the game and a roughing the passer penalty led to a first down at the 27.
On third-and-eight from the 25, Drake Wilmore picked up 15 yards and a first down at the 10.
Two plays later, Crockett flipped a 10-yard touchdown toss to Tristen Shanks, putting the Spartans in front 6-0.
Claiborne responded with an eight-play, 70-yard drive of its own.
Brock Ayers' 21-yard pass to Kody Ingle moved the chains to the Prairie View 47.
A 15-yard facemask led to another first down at the 15.
Shanks and Ross Blackard combined to stop a first down running play for no gain but Reed Anders swept around left end for the touchdown on the following snap. Tucker Smith ran the 2-point conversion, giving the visitors an 8-6 lead with 10:27 to play.
Prairie View managed a first down on its next series, but the drive stalled when Ingle picked off a third down pass at the Claiborne 37.
Unveiling a fast-paced spread attack, the Spartans produced 199 total yards (139 passing, 60 rushing). Crockett completed 10-of-18 passes and rushed five times for 24 stripes. Bryan, who had a big game offensively and defensively, caught four passes for 87 yards.
Claiborne had 109 yards of total offense including 88 on the ground. Anders carried four times for 39 yards.
