  • On Friday, August 15, the Bastrop Fire Department responded to fires at two separate locations — one within city limits and one outside of town on the Crossett Rd.
The first fire occurred at a residence at 212 Highland Ave. The BFD responded at 4:40 a.m. and arrived at 4:43 a.m. The fire was extinguished by 5:32 a.m. According to BFD Chief Eric Montgomery, this fire was suspicious and is under investigation by the BFD and the La. State Fire Marshall.
Despite the fire taking place on Highland Ave. — down the street from a suspected arson that occurred Monday, August 11 at Timberland Terrace Apartments — Chief Montgomery stated that the two incidents do not appear to be related.
A comment on the apartment fire cannot be made until the investigation by the state fire marshall is complete, but an announcement may take place next week.
The second fire occurred during the afternoon next door to 12963 Crossett Rd. Four firetrucks from the BFD responded to this fire at 12:09 a.m. and were on the scene at 12:16 a.m.
According to Chief Montgomery, this fire, which occurred outside of city limits, appears to be an accident and took place where a demolition was occurring. A burn pile was in use, but that is allowed outside of city limits. It is not suspicious in nature.
