On Thursday, six Morehouse Parish scholars were recognized and awarded a Workforce Investment Act scholarship at the Airport Campus of Louisiana Delta Community College as part of Morehouse Business and Careers Solutions Center's 2nd Annual Scholarship Recognition Day.
The WIA Scholarship is offered in both May and November. Potential recipients must have a desire to work in demand occupations which the Louisiana Workforce Commission defines as Health Care and Social Assistance; Manufacturing; Accommodation and Food Services; and Finance and Industry.
Five of the six recipients are enrolled in nursing studies. Mariah Rogers is working toward becoming an LPN at LDCC in Bastrop as are Kimberly Jones and Hannah Crockett. Kasey Chowns is working toward the same at LDCC in West Monroe while Tina Broadnax is pursuing nursing at LDCC in Monroe. The sixth recipient, Don'Neshia Odom, is pursuing business office technology at LDCC in Bastrop.
Also recognized during the awarding of scholarships were three career coordinators — Mary Hayes, Angela Marshall and Sandra Williams — who work with the recipients as they pursue their studies.
During her closing comments, Krishundra Nelson, outreach and recruitment coordinator with the Northeast Louisiana Workforce Center, reminded the students that the center will remain a resource for them.
"We're very proud of you," Nelson said, "and if you need any kind of assistance, we are just one phone call away and will help you any way we can."
