  • The American Legion Post 51 of Bastrop hosted a free health fair on Thursday for veterans and members of the community.
The event was held from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. and a small crowd had gathered when the Enterprise stopped by around 11 a.m.
“I'm a nurse,” American Legion Auxiliary Secretary Martha Anderson said. “We just want to offer veterans more options as far as healthcare. We want them to know what's out there.”
“This is one of our projects for veterans and to help give back to the community,” American Legion Auxiliary President Patsy Billings said.
Booths were set up by different local health organizations and local businesses for attendees to browse through. In addition to looking through different health care services available in the community, p people could get their blood pressure taken and get their blood sugar checked.
“It's a really good thing,” City Marshall Lisa Chafford said. “It's something the public really needs. Not everyone can afford to go to the doctor and get their blood pressure and sugar checked. I really do thank the veterans for all the work they do.”
Organizers were already talking about next year and making the health fair an annual event.
“We hope next year, it will be bigger and better,” Anderson said.
“We also hope to see more vets come out,” Terri Lee, one of the organizers who helped make the fair possible, said.
