Three years ago, sisters Holly Lawrence and Sandra Middleton joined together to form a drama team through a co-op class to give home-schooled kids a chance to participate in the arts.
“You can do different kinds [of classes],” Lawrence said. “We chose to do drama.”
Lawrence and Middleton named their drama team Godz Crazy Raizins, and the team performs Christian skits with a message behind them. The kids meet every Friday for the class and have extra practices before a performance. They have performed at Tillou Baptist Church, Lagniappe Nursing Home and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
“It's fun,” GCR team member Jake Lawrence said. “I get to act.”
Co-op classes are offered at Harmony Baptist Church in Collinston through Morehouse Homeschool Association every Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for families that sign up. Kids can choose four different classes from the variety of classes the co-op offers and will have a break for lunch. The classes are meant to be an added educational experience for those already taking home-school curriculum. This is not a drop-off event; the co-op is an educational add-on supported by parent involvement. Parents must stay and participate. They can help out several ways including teaching a class, helping with cleanup, etc.
“One of the effects is having support,” Tamala Floyd President of the board for Morehouse Homeschool Association said. “It's helpful for parents learning to choose curriculum. It's helpful for the kids to be able to take classes in a classroom environment and to be able to make friends. It's also good for them to get used to learning from someone other than their parents, especially for kids that are going to go on to college.”
Registration for new families to sign up for co-op classes through the Morehouse Homeschool Association will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 at Harmony Baptist Church in Collinston.
The Morehouse Home-school Association is for any family that home-schools. There is a $50 association fee for new families, and membership includes website access, field trip, family fun nights and other activities.
