  • On Monday, August 11, the Bastrop Fire Department was investigating a suspected arson that took place at the Timberland Terrace Apartments.
BFD Fire investigator Thomas Crowder stated that the occupant returned home to find the fire smoldering and called the fire department.
The department responded and upon entry found a suspicious situation that suggested arson.
"I responded," Crowder said, "and in my subsequent investigation, found several locations within the house where materials from the house were piled up as starting points."
Crowder related that a fire with multiple starting points is generally an arson case.
The Bastrop Police Department was also called in, and at the scene samples were taken and turned over to the BPD for analysis.
Crowder emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that Rick Abbott, state fire marshall, will be leading the investigation from this point forward.
"We want the city to know we investigate every potential arson case and follow up to the best of our ability," Crowder said. "We want to end this situation in the city of Bastrop."
Crowder encourages anyone with information about this or other arson cases to contact both the Bastrop Fire Department at 283.3353 and the Bastrop Police Department at 281.1322.
