Oak Woods Home for the Elderly residents have been testing out their cooking skills on Wednesdays recently with a cooking class hosted by Oak Woods Activities Department and Therapy Department.

“We alternate Wednesdays with the Therapy Department,” Activities Director Tina Carney said. “This Wednesday was our day, and we made banana pudding.”

Residents were provided with the necessary ingredients: pudding, bananas and Nilla Wafers. They were then able to mix the ingredients and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

“After they finish mixing it, they get to eat it,” Carney said. “That's their favorite part.”

The area used for these cooking classes is a full kitchen that was previously donated to the facility by The Women in God’s Service (T.W.I.G.S.) back in 2011. The therapy department and Administrator Susan Musgrove mentioned at that time that they believed it would be an important addition to the therapy services at Oak Woods and that the equipment would allow residents to be more involved in the activities of daily living and help short-term stay residents transition to home.

Oak Woods Home for the Elderly is a non-profit nursing home facility located at 1400 Davenport Ave. in Mer Rouge and sponsored by the Mer Rouge Lions Club.
