Riverfield Tournament

Exploding for all five of its runs in the top of the sixth, the Prairie View Lady Spartans advanced to the championship game of the Riverfield Tournament with a 5-1 victory over the host Lady Raiders on Saturday afternoon.

Prairie View's Jeri Harper and Riverfield's Caroline Cater traded goose eggs through five innings of regulation play, putting the international tiebreaker rule into effect in the sixth.

Morgan Grayson trotted out to second base to start the top of the sixth with the top of the Lady Spartans' batting order coming up.

Wasting no time, Harper delivered an RBI single to center for the first run of the game.

Amery Clark then legged out a bunt single. Both runners moved up a base when Harper escaped a rundown between second and third.

After Ryder lined out to the circle for the first out, Alyssa Montgomery's two-run single to left put the Lady Spartans in front 3-0.

Montgomery came around to score as Yarbrough and Stewart reached on back-to-back fielding errors. Alexus DeBlieux's RBI single to left wrapped up the scoring.

Placed on second base to start the Lady Raiders' segment of the sixth, Michela Lewis moved to third on Cherie Tanner's groundout to Montgomery at third base. JoAnna Franklin followed with a sacrifice fly to a backpedaling Prairie View shortstop Bailey Ryder, who made a sprawling catch for the second out.

Both teams had their chances early.

With one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the first, Harper, first baseman Sheridan May and catcher Haley Yarbrough combined to turn an inning-ending 1-3-2 double play.

Harper threw out a runner at the plate on a bunt for the second out of the second inning.

Cater allowed only one runner past second base in regulation.

Jayla Stewart singled up the middle with one down in the second, advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch, but Cater struck out the next two batters.

Prairie View wasted a leadoff single and stolen base by Ryder in the fourth.

Harper yielded a leadoff single to Madison Parker before striking out the side in the Riverfield fifth.

Harper allowed five hits and fanned four without issuing a walk.

Seven different Lady Spartans — Harper, Clark, Ryder, Montgomery, Yarbrough, Stewart and DeBlieux — contributed base hits

Tanner and Foster went 2-for-3 and Parker singled for the Lady Raiders.

Cater recorded five punchouts, walked none and hit one batter.

Prairie View 4, Glenbrook 1

Bailey Ryder helped her own cause with a two-run double as the Lady Spartans handled Glenbrook in Saturday's 9 a.m. game.

Leading 1-0, Prairie View added to its advantage with three in the bottom of the second.

Haley Yarbrough and Jeri Harper singled and Amery Clark reached via error, bringing the score to 2-0. Up next, Ryder cranked a two-RBI double.

Ryder struck out eight, walked zero and permitted three hits in the five-inning game.

Harper led the Lady Spartans at the plate with a pair of singles.

Prairie View 6, University Academy 5

Bailey Ryder doubled home Tabor Moyers with the winning run as Prairie View downed University Academy (formerly Cenla Christian) in Friday's first round action.

Prairie View's season opener was determined under international tiebreaker laws.

Trailing 3-2, the Lady Spartans tied the game with a deuce in the bottom of the fourth.

UA went up 5-3 with two in the fifth before the Lady Spartans answered with a trifecta in the fifth.

Jeri Harper was the winning pitcher for PVA.
