  • Local nursing homes are preparing to compete in the Senior Olympics scheduled for next week.
Cherry Ridge, Lagniappe and Le Grand nursing homes will be competing with 30 other nursing homes for gold, silver and bronze medals. Competitive events will include spectator, beanbag toss, horseshoes, chariot race, shot put, discus throw and socrates trivia. Nursing homes will also be awarded for having the best banner, which residents will show off at the games.
“We are all very, very excited,” Lagniappe Activities Director Kate McLendon said. “Residents have been practicing. This is a very family oriented time. We have a lot of families involved
Lagniappe's team will be the Krewe of Lagniappe. For our banner, all of the painting and gluing was done by residents with materials donated by family members.”
Cherry Ridge Nursing Home will be competing as the Cherry Ridge Braves. They decided to go with a Native American theme and all of the residents will all pick out names for themselves that go along with that theme. According to Activities Director Sandy Dunlap, they will have 14 residents going to the games.
“We invite everybody down to ULM Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Friday, August 1 at 9 a.m. to watch us compete,” Dunlap said.
