  • Registrar's office moves
The Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters' office moved to a new location on Desiard St. It is now located at 1650 Desiard St. in Room B125 and shares that building with the Ouachita Parish Health Clinic. However, the Registrar's office maintains a separate entrance facing Desiard St.
    State sales tax holiday announced
The Louisiana Department of Revenue has scheduled the 2014 Louisiana Annual Sales Tax Holiday for Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday Aug. 2. According to the Department, residents are exempt from the state sales tax on the first $2,500 of the purchase price for most individual items for non-business use.
If an item costs more than $2,500, state sales tax must be paid on the overage. For example, state sales tax would need to be paid on $500 of an item with a purchase price of $3,000.
Residents are still responsible for paying sales taxes levied at the local level, such as those for parishes, municipalities, school boards and other state political subdivisions. The holiday only covers the four percent state sales tax.
    Back-to-school approaches
Ouachita Parish students have one month to prepare for the first full day back at school. On Aug. 14 to 15, students in grades first to 12th attend for a half-day while Pre-K and Kindergarten have testing days. On Monday, Aug. 18, the first full day of school occurs for grades first to 12th. On this day, Pre-K and Kindergarten will still be testing and on Aug. 19, only girls in Pre-K and Kindergarten attend while boys only attend on Aug. 20.
