  • The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America recently granted a young Bastrop resident — Cameron Williams — a wish of a shopping spree in Monroe. Williams is a 14-year-old girl with cerebral palsy who was able to use her wish to obtain necessities and a few wants.
Ora Lea McGee with Make-A-Wish went on the shopping trip with the Williams and her grandmother and primary caregiver, Lynn Williams.
"It was a good trip," McGee said. "This was a child who has CP and is in a wheelchair. Her grandmother takes care of her, and her mother passed away. This is a grandmother who really took care of the child's needs."
The shopping spree made stops at BASIC, where a bed and mattresses were purchased; at Sally's Beauty Supply, where a portable chair and bowl were purchased to allow for easier hair washes and at Shoe Depot, where tennis shoes and socks were bought.
The group also traveled through the mall and purchased church dresses for Williams at JCPenney and a television for her room and sheets at Sears.
Throughout the trip Williams sang Aretha Franklin and church songs while listening to music on McGee's phone.
According to her grandmother, the trip was a great success.
"We had a fabulous time," Lynn Williams said. "They [Make-A-Wish] are a wonderful organization. Cameron really did enjoy the trip."
Williams said that the group enjoyed lunch and that Cameron remained in good spirits throughout the day even though long outings can make her cranky.
"We had a great day," Williams said, "and she was in a great mood."
According to the Make-A-Wish website, the foundation grants the wishes of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories. On average, a wish is granted every 38 minutes.
"We believe that a wish can be a game-changer," the site states. "This one belief guides us. It inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve."
