  • Gavin Pollock, Jerry Powell earn honorable mention accolades

  • Junior catcher Gavin Pollock and sophomore first baseman Jerry Powell of Bastrop have received honorable mention recognition on the Class 4A All-State baseball team as selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
    Senior catcher Chase Vallot of state champion St. Thomas More is the repeat Class 4A MVP. Vallot posted a .545 batting average with an incredible 1.111 slugging percentage, 13 home runs, 15 doubles, a triple, 62 RBI and 45 runs scored. A 40th round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals in the recent Major League draft, Vallot is currently playing for Burlington of the Appalachian League.
    In all, the Cougars from Lafayette placed four players on the first unit. Joining Vallot are senior pitchers Wyatt Marks (8-1, 0.76) and Sam Houston (9-0, 1.00) and junior utility man O'Neal Lochridge (.338-7-48).
    Paul Guerriero is Coach of the Year after piloting Neville to a 27-12 record, a state runner-up finish and the District 2-4A title in his first season with the Tigers.
    Shortstop Brian Barefoot (.358, 21 RBI) and outfielder Michael Green (.384-4-35) of Neville received first-team accolades.
    State semifinalists West Ouachita and St. Michael the Archangel both have two first-team honorees.
    Pitcher Jordan Antley (9-1) and third baseman Zach Watson (.459-9-35) of the Chiefs are joined by first baseman Austin Edens (.468-11-52) and outfielder J.T. Mauldin (.368-8-40) of St. Michael.
    Closing out the first team are Edna Karr pitcher Tyree Thompson, DeRidder second baseman J.J. Faciane, Teurlings outfielder Zach Lafleur, and utility players Jordan Shaffer of Benton, Jimmy Prieur of East Jefferson, Adam Nelson of Tioga and Tyler Landry of Assumption.
    Pollock turned in a .368 batting average with a .444 on base percentage and a .434 slugging clip along with 28 hits and 13 RBI en route to gaining first-team All-District 2-4A accolades for the second straight season.
    Powell (.368/.455/.486), a first-team All-Northeast Louisiana selection, supplied 28 hits, a home run, six doubles and 14 RBI.
