  • Kevin Heard signs with Missouri Valley College

  • Former Bastrop High running back Kevin “KJ” Heard has signed with Missouri Valley College.
    As a senior, Heard rushed 70 times for 348 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing several games with an injury. He carried 10 times for 71 yards and a touchdown in a 55-14 season-opening victory over Huntington and turned in a 13-60-1 effort in a 34-32 loss to state semifinalist Neville. Heard broke off a season-long 30-yard run in a 40-14 season-ending loss to Warren Easton in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
    Playing in all 12 games as a junior, Heard tallied 770 yards and 10 touchdowns on 123 carries (6.2 yards per carry) in helping the Rams advance to the regional round of the state playoffs with an 8-4 mark.
    An NAIA school, Missouri Valley competes in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Vikings were 9-3 last season.
     
    7-ON-7: Bastrop will play in the West Monroe 7-on-7 tournament Friday and Saturday.
     
    FIRECRACKER: Entries are now being accepted for the 43rd annual Firecracker 4-Ball to be held Saturday, July 5 and Sunday July 6 at the Morehouse Country Club. Tournament festivities get under way with the traditional pre-tournament scramble Friday, July 4.

    FIRST WIN: Former ULM righthander Tyler Bray turned in a memorable performance in his professional debut Saturday night.
    Bray worked two perfect innings with six strikeouts to earn the win in the State College Spikes' 6-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Jamestown Jammers.
    Bray was drafted in the 26th round by the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this week.
