  • Inmate attempts escape at court
    While making an appearance at the Morehouse Parish Courthouse for his 72-hour hearing, Marquest L. Bolden, age 18, attempted to escape from custody while wearing shackles and cuffs.
    Bolden was arrested over the weekend on charges of simple burglary, introduction of contraband to a penal institution and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
    Despite his efforts, Bolden was immediately recaptured and is being held at the Morehouse Parish Jail.
    Unemployment numbers released
    In the latest state update for unemployment insurance data, claims rose across all measurements. Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week that ended on June 7 rose to 3,292 from 2,976 during the previous week. Claims also increased in the moving average of the last four-weeks from 2,628 to 2,899.
    Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the same week moved from 19,576 to 20,745 while the four-week moving average moved up from 18,985 to 19,447.
    According to Louisiana Workforce Commission data, the industries with the highest number of initial claims during the week ending June 7 were health care and social assistance, construction, educational services, accommodations and food service and retail trade.
    In Morehouse Parish, for the week ending June 7, there were 30 initial claims and 214 continued claims. Continued claims are defined by the LWC as each week claimed subsequent to the filing of the initial claim for a week of unemployment compensation.
    East Madison pool is open for the summer
    The pool in East Madison park is open for the 2014 swimming pool season. Hours of operation are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m to 8 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The pool is closed on Saturdays for cleaning and will be closed on Friday, July 4. General admission is $2 for both youth and adults. Season tickets and swimming lessons are available.
