  • Students returning to Delta Magnet in the fall may find their school pride amplified thanks to the appearance of a new statue of the school's mascot, the mustang, over the summer break.
On June 4, workers were on the scene at Delta installing the stallion.
According to Principal Cynthia Clark, who will be moving from her position at Delta to a new position at Bastrop High School during the summer, she wanted to see a statue on the campus but needed to raise the money for the project. For help, she turned to the school's alumni.
"After I had the idea of putting a statue out there, I started contacting some of the alumni to make donations," Clark said.
The fundraising goal was met, and Clark is grateful to those who made it possible.
Clark also said that the school hopes to involve students in the project by hosting a "Name the Mustang" contest when school is back in session or over the summer by holding a call-out to students.
Future plans also include installing outdoor lighting that will allow the cast-iron aluminum statue, which was made by Bailey's Ltd. of West Monroe, to be visible at night from the Mer Rouge and Collinston Road.
