  • Sterlington Memorial Library is encouraging kids to read through the Summer Reading Program hosted by the Ouachita Parish Public Library.
The theme for the Summer Reading Program is “Fizz, Boom, Read” and is centered around science. The program runs from June 1 through July 31. The library is focusing its weekly story time around science for the duration of the program. This week's theme was germs and next week's theme will be robots. Story time is held at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday in the meeting room at the library.
“The kids had a really good time today,” Children's Librarian Serena Tenison said about the children's first science themed story time.
The library will also be hosting Fun Science Fridays at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays. Children will have the opportunity to participate in an experiment.
“Our programs are designed for kids of all ages to come and have fun,” Tenison said. “It gives the kids something to do during the summer and gives them a good incentive to read over the summer.”
The Ouachita Parish Public Library's Summer Reading Program will gives out prizes for the first 10 books or 300 pages a child reads during the program. Additional prizes are given out for for reading 25 books or 750 pages and finishing 50 books or 1500 pages. Children will get an entry in a grand prize drawing to be held at the end of summer for every 25 books they log.
Also, children will be entered to win a special grand prize every time they attend a program. Just ask a local librarian for a Mad Scientist badge. Each time they attend a program, they get a dot on the back of their badge. Attend 10 programs to be entered into a drawing for a telescope and microscope. The drawing will take place on August 4.
The Children's Summer Reading Program is open to ages 0 to 12.
Children can sign up or be signed up by a parent for the program by visiting www.oplib.org, clicking on the “Sign Up for Summer Reading” link and following the instructions or visiting any OPPL branch. Once signed up, the books they have read can be entered using the online book log.
