United States Representative Vance McAllister will be visiting the Fort Hero Veterans Barracks today.
U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister represents Louisiana’s Fifth Congressional District and serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Agriculture.
Mayor Arthur Jones will also be in attendance and will join McAllister on a tour of the barracks at 1:30 p.m today.
Fort Hero Veterans Barracks, located at 200 Fort Hero St. formally known as South Alvin Street in Bastrop, once completed will be a full service facility to house homeless veterans and assist them in adjusting to civilian life. The building being renovated is formerly a 45-bed nursing home that was donated to the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Association.
Project Manager and Northeast Louisiana Veterans Association President Assistant Roy Cook said in a former interview that veterans in need will be welcome at the facility as long as they are willing to get the help they need to get a job, get off drugs or alcohol or get training.
“There are lots of veterans who are either homeless or in need in the area,” Cook said. “We just can't turn our backs on these brave men and women.”
According to Northeast Louisiana Veterans Association President Al Sanders, they could still use a lot of help with some of the building renovations.
