During the past week, Morehouse Junior High hosted two different year-end events to celebrate the accomplishments of students during the 2013-14 school year.

On Friday, May 9, the 134 members of the school's eighth grade class held a graduation ceremony in the auditorium. Bastrop native Denzel Devall served as guest speaker at the commencement service and delivered a speech about his experiences as a consistently achieving student and athlete and encouraged students to aim high in academics and in life.

"Always set goals," Devall said. "Set your goals high, whether it's short-term or long-term. You want to set your goals, so you can wake up every morning and know what you've got to reach. It keeps you focused on the main prize. I always set my goal highs."

Graduation attendees also enjoyed musical selections and a slideshow before each departing eighth grader received a diploma from the school.

Students who performed the song "Greater Is Coming" at graduation had the opportunity to sing it again at the MJH School Choir's Spring Concert, which was held on Tuesday, May 13 under the direction of John D. Griffin Jr. with Terrance Smith serving as accompanist.

The concert featured both the choir and students from the school's music appreciation classes performing a variety of material ranging from classical to gospel to patriotic.

Music appreciation students performed three different songs with recorders, including a round of "Are You Sleeping?" while the choir performed multiple songs as a group and one, "Greater Is Coming," with two soloists, Kenterria Addison and MaKenzie White.

A crowd favorite was the gospel anthem "Genesis," which featured Choir Director John D. Griffin, Jr. joining in the performance while Principal Sheila Minor conducted.

After the concert, Griffin distributed awards and pins to his students and commented on the efforts of the program as a whole.

"I'm excited about this year," said Griffin. "We have a well-rounded musical program, and the best is yet to come
