Bastrop High School's The Ram Krewe has been gearing up for Relay for Life.
This year's team honors four faculty members and three students who are teaching or enrolled at the school. Faculty members are Billie French, Chezwic Van-Lovett, Monica Jordan and Steve Busby. Students are Ryan Harris, Kelsey Blake and Brittany Carter.
“This year has been really rough on our BHS family,” teacher Brianne Allen said. “Within four months of each other we had two very dedicated very talented teachers diagnosed with cancer. Both ladies are fighting hard to make it through all of this. This has made us realize how this dreaded disease can affect you.”
The school has had several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for this event. Valentine grams were sold for $1 and delivered on Valentine's Day. The Valentine's hearts each had a sucker attached and a message from the sender.
The school also arranged for a Sweets for the Relay fundraiser. Every Friday, four faculty members donate sweet treats, and they are sold to the faculty and student body for $1 each.
T-shirts for the team were sold at the school and will also be available for purchase the day of the Relay.
Also at the Relay, The Ram Krewe will be selling drinks, nachos, cotton candy and fried candy bars. There will be several games including pick a duck which will have prizes for kids of all ages. JROTC will have a dunking booth, face painting and nail designs. The cheerleaders will have pictures with Sam and maybe a kissing booth.
Relay for Life will be held at 6 p.m. on May 9 at Bastrop High School, and the theme for this year is Mardi Gras. The money raised from the event will go to the American Cancer Society.
