  • Bastrop High School awarded students for academic excellence on Thursday, April 24, with a Senior Scholars’ Reception held at the Bastrop Visitor Center.
Out of 207 students in this year’s senior class, 11 met the strict academic standards required to be honored at the annual Senior Scholars’ Reception.
According to Mitzi Quinn, an English teacher at Bastrop High School, only seniors who score at least a 21 on the ACT and have a cumulative 3.5 or higher grade point average receive the honor.
“These students have worked their tails off,” Aluthia Palmer-Brooks, a guidance counselor at Bastrop High, said. “These will be some of your TOPS scholarship recipients.”
The reception started with the presentation of colors by Cadet Sgt. First Class Chandler Fagan and Cadet Staff Sgt. Deaquannisia Green, members of the Bastrop High JROTC under the command of Sgt. Harrison.
Bastrop High School student of the year Clay Winnon then led the group in prayer before Dr. Nordman, BHS Principal, began his remarks.
Nordman focused on recognizing the current accomplishments of the scholars, such as many of them being able to leave high school as collegiate sophomores, while also noting that there is much more to come.
“I salute you for what you are, and what you are yet to become,” Nordman said, “Pay it forward. Someone’s going to need a hand, an encouragement...you be that person. If you put others before you, you will will always finish first.”
“Go forward. Make us proud. Enjoy this night and the graduation season.”
Rashini Tappin, Mikyia Porter, Lester Lee, Raven Garrison, Dominique Minnieweather, Nigena Brooks, Clay Winnon and Samuel Schwartz were all on-hand to receive their awards. Scholars Brittney Almaroad, Dineshia Chatman and Jacob Pickett were unable to attend the reception.
