ASH 6, Bastrop 3

Snapping a 3-all stalemate with three runs in the top of the seventh, the Alexandria Senior High Trojans topped Bastrop 6-3 Monday night at Baron Ballpark.

Leading off the pivotal inning, Blake Painter reached on a fielding error, bringing up the top of the batting order. Putting down a bunt, Kevin Vanasselberg also reached on an error, placing runners at first and second with still nobody out.

Next up, Justin McQuillen drove in the go-ahead run with a double to right field. ASH (24-6), the District 2-5A runner-up, added a pair of insurance markers on Aaron Armstrong's sacrifice fly and Trace Carter's base hit.

Bastrop (11-16) brought the tying run to the plate in the home half of the seventh as Khayree Robinson and Dollar Ridgell were hit by pitches, placing runners at first and second with two away. Called to the mound from shortstop, Matthew Beck then came on to induce a game-ending force play.

Armstrong singled home McQuillen, who walked, staking the Trojans to a 1-0 first-inning lead.

Bastrop tied the game in the home half of the second when Tristen Shanks drew a one-out walk and Skadarryo Johnson crushed a one-out triple to right field.

ASH regained the lead with a deuce in the third on Chris Dodson's two-out double which plated Armstrong, who walked, and Trace Carter, who hit into a fielder's choice.

Bastrop evened the board with two in its half of the third.

Gavin Pollock, representing the top of the lineup, took a pitch for the team. Josh Bradbury, Pollock's courtesy runner, scuttled to second on a wild pitch and scored on Dollar Ridgell's single down the left field line.

Ridgell swiped second and eventually crossed home with the equalizer on Kylan Ricks' base hit to right-center.

The score remained 3-3 until the seventh.

John Hensi held the Rams scoreless on three hits through 3 2/3 innings to gain the win in relief of Dodson. Beck earned the save.

McQuillen and Dodson doubled and Armstrong, Carter and Painter singled for the Trojans.

Bastrop out-hit ASH 7-5, but was unable to overcome five errors. Johnson tripled and singled and Pollock, Ridgell, Sharp, Ricks and Robinson supplied base hits.

Sharp went the distance on the bump for the Rams, surrendering two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking four.

Bastrop returns to action Thursday night vs. West Ouachita, with a 6 p.m. starting time.
