Riverfield 8, Prairie View 3 (1st game)

Connor Copeland's two-run single highlighted a four-run third inning and Chase Eppinette went the distance on the mound as Riverfield upended Prairie View 8-3 in the front end of an MAIS District 3-2A double header.

Riverfield, which beat the Spartans 11-1 in Rayville on March 25, clinched the three-game series with Saturday's victory.

Prairie View got off to a fast start.

With one out in the home half of the first, Cole Bryan was grazed by a pitch, Brandon Jacobs doubled to left and Dylan Carroll bounced a two-run single up the middle.

Sending 10 batters to the box in a bizarre third inning, the Raiders forged a 4-2 lead.

Brennan Morris led off with a base hit to left and Matt Temple walked with one down.

Riverfield's next five batters reached safely, before the Spartans could record the third out.

Eppinette singled to load the bases, squaring the score at 2.

Prairie View starter Dylan Carroll, who uncharacteristically struggled with his control, then plunked three straight batters to force in two more runs. Noah Wroten took a pitch off the foot, Cody Dixon was hit in the back and Blake Daniel was struckin the ribs.

Prairie View closed the gap to 4-3 in its half of the third when Cole Bryan bashed a leadoff double to left, moved to third on a passed ball and hustled home on a wild pitch.

Eppinette, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, the Raiders, added deuces in the fourth and seventh.

Marc Simmons singled sharply to left to start the fifth, stole second, held at third as Patrick Pelley was safe on a two-base error and crossed home on Eppinette's sacrifice fly to center. Following a walk to Copeland, Noah Wroten stroked an opposite-field RBI to left, expanding the Raiders' lead to 6-3.

Consecutive walks to Morris, Simmons and Temple loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh. Two more runs came across as Pelley singled to center and continued to second on a misplay.

Eppinette, a sophomore righthander, struck out six, walked two and hit three for the win.

Riverfield received singles from Simmons, Temple, Pelley, Eppinette, Copeland, Wroten and Morris.

Bryan and Layne Gray doubled and singled for the Spartans, Matt Reed jabbed a pair of singles, Jacobs doubled and Carroll and Crockett singled.

Carroll whiffed six, hit five and walked two in four-plus innings in taking the loss. Jacobs and Reed finished up on the mound for the Spartans.
