Delta Magnet School was granted permission to increase its grade level to the ninth grade at the April 1 Morehouse Parish School Board meeting. This change will also include reconfiguration of other components of the school.

School spokesperson Pam Benton explained that all sixth graders will be grouped together in a sixth grade academy. In this plan, students will have one teacher for reading and social studies; one teacher for math and science and one teacher for English/writing/successmaker. They will also have the opportunity to participate in electives and physical education.

For the academy, two additional teachers will be needed.

For the newly granted ninth grade, a freshman academy will be created. For these students, English 1 and honor's English will be offered as well as physical science, biology and algebra I. Students will also participate in physical education and have their choice of band, choir, art, drama, keyboarding, JROTC, ACT prep, a foreign language or home economics as electives.

Benton said the additional cost for two full time and two part time teachers will be paid through the Eastern Morehouse Tax District.
