  • A Bastrop man is behind bars on animal cruelty charges following a tip to the Bastrop Police Department.
BPD Chief Downey Black said the office received a call around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon regarding suspected dog fighting in the woods located at the end of Crepe Myrtle. As officers went to the area, they walked along the wood line and heard the sound of dogs barking coming from the wooded area. Officers found nine pit bulls chained to trees. The dogs showed a variety of injuries as well as signs of malnutrition.
Ivory Johnson III, 37, 1018 Crepe Myrtle, admitted the dogs belonged to him and was placed under arrest for nine counts of animal cruelty and transported to the Morehouse Parish jail. Each count holds a $250 bond. If convicted, Johnson faces being fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than six months, or both on each count. Additionally, Johnson shall be ordered to perform five eight-hour days of court-approved community service upon conviction.
