Sha'Keria Kelly poured in 17 points as the Ferriday Lady Trojans prevailed over Sterlington 53-29 Friday night in the District 2-2A opener for both teams.
Down 7-0, the Lady Panthers battled back to take an 8-7 lead on a Bronwyn Pepper free throw, LaTasha English's three-point play, MeShanna English's layup off of a LaTasha English steal and LaTasha English's elbow jumper.
D'Asia Mitchell stopped the Sterlington run with a six-foot jumper, before the Lady Panthers regained the lead, 10-9, on Keilah Williams' driving layup.
Trenance Morgan's transition basket gave the Lady Trojans an 11-10 edge at the end of the quarter.
Ferriday would never trail again.
Kelly slashed her way for a layup and made one-of-two free throws and Jada Griggs added a three-point play to give the Lady Trojans a 17-10 lead.
Later in the second quarter, rebound buckets by Jasz Davis on consecutive possessions helped Ferriday up its advantage to 24-12. Two LaTasha English free throws brought the score to 24-14 at halftime.
Sterlington cut the deficit to six, 32-26, on Kaniesha Carr's open 17-footer and LaTasha English's bucket from down low.
In the final minute of the third quarter, a Davis free throw and Griggs' deuce from the paint gave Ferriday a 35-26 edge heading into the final stanza.
Kelly was responsible for four points and Davis scored on a putback as the Lady Trojans rattled off six straight points to open up a 41-26 bulge with just under five minutes to play.
Ferriday (6-7) outscored the Lady Panthers 18-3 in the fourth quarter.
Griggs turned in a 12-point effort to join Kelly in double digits.
LaTasha English was high scorer for the Lady Panthers (11-8) with nine.
Sterlington shot just 12-of-65 (18.5 percent) from the floor, including 0-of-8 from 3-point range.
