OCS 4, Bastrop 2

Jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Ouachita Christian spoiled the Bastrop Lady Rams' home soccer debut with a 4-2 victory Tuesday night at Ram Stadium.

Abby Benson opened the scoring with a powerful kick to the right side of the net early in the match.

Chandler Manning sneaked a second goal through before halftime.

Taylor Hogan's goal from eight feet out put the visitors in front 3-0 early in the second half.

For the first 45 minutes of the 70-minute contest (due to the cold weather, both coaches consented to shorten the match by 10 minutes during a pregame meeting), the Lady Rams were on the defensive.

“We got off to a slow start,” Bastrop coach Jessica Pylant said. “This was the first time we've had our entire team together since before the Christmas break. We've had several out battling the flu and bronchitis and we have one out with a knee injury.

“I was pleased with the effort, especially after taking two weeks off for Christmas. We had a lot of teamwork and I was happy to see the communication on the field.”

Bastrop made its first shot of the night count when Ambrejhza Farrar scored her first goal of the season.

However, the Lady Rams' momentum proved to be short-lived.

Less than a minute later, the Lady Eagles went up 4-1 on an own goal to all but seal the verdict.

Bastrop's Quan'Niecia Bradshaw found the net from the right side in the closing minutes to wrap up the scoring.

Under duress for much of the match, Bastrop's defense held up remarkably well. Goalkeeper Shelrika Bryant, a first-year soccer player, accounted for 14 saves.

“Shelrika has been a great addition for us,” Pylant said. “She has a good softball background, so she's used to fielding the ball and watching the ball. She has stepped in and saved a lot of goals for us.”

Defenders Caitlin Robinson, Zoey Behnke and Katina Washington also kept the game from getting out of hand.

“Caitlin and Zoey are our captains and they work real well together,” Pylant said. “Katina's been a good asset as our center midfielder. She has a strong, powerful leg and does a good job of getting the ball back to our half of the field.”

Bastrop is back in action Thursday (Jan. 9), hosting West Ouachita in the district opener at 5:30 p.m.
