Only one of 11 government agencies in Morehouse Parish with audit reports due to state officials by Dec. 31 met the deadline, a decline from the previous year when three reports met the deadline.
State law requires governmental agencies to submit audit or compliance reports to the Office of the Legislative Auditor (OLA) within six months after the agency’s fiscal year ends. In Morehouse Parish, 11 agencies operate on fiscal years that run from July 1 through June 30. Provided they meet certain criteria, those agencies may request extensions of the deadline.
A check of the OLA website Thursday showed only the Morehouse Parish Lake Commission – which lists assets of $44.55 – met the reporting deadline. Reports from Bastrop City Court, the city of Bastrop, the Morehouse Association for Retarded Citizens, the Morehouse Council on Aging, the Morehouse Parish School Board, the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Morehouse Sales and Use Tax Commission, the Morehouse Soil and Water Conservation District and the village of Bonita were not posted on the website. It is possible the documents have been received but not yet posted due to the rush of reports coming into the office just prior to the deadline.
Though statutes require the reports be filed within the six-month time frame, the OLA has historically granted a two-week grace period in having the reports filed. Joy Irwin, director of advisory services for the agency, has previously said there are a large number of agencies statewide whose fiscal years ends on June 30 and only a limited number of accountants and auditing firms OKd by the state who can complete the reports.
For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, only the city of Bastrop, the Morehouse Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission and the village of Bonita met the deadline. The report from the Morehouse Parish Clerk of Court was mailed before the deadline and received Jan. 2, 2012. Others, including Bastrop City Court, the Morehouse Association for Retarded Citizens, the Morehouse Council on Aging and the Morehouse Soil and Water Conservation District were received within the grace period.
Other reports and the dates they were received are:
Morehouse Parish School Board – Feb. 6, 2013; and
Morehouse Parish Sheriff – Feb. 20, 2013.
