  • For the 23rd year, the Paragon Civic Club will host it's Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program.
The program, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at the New Second Missionary Baptist Church, will honor this year's scholarship recipients as well as give them the opportunity to meet District 6 State Representative Katrina Jackson, who is slated to be the guest speaker.
In order to be eligible for the one-time scholarship, students must be at least a sophomore in an accredited Louisiana university and have maintained a certain grade point average. They also must fill out an application. The club gives three to five scholarships throughout the year, at an average of $500 each.
"The candidates are asked to write a summary of why they're a good candidate for the scholarship," Shirley Lenoir, Paragon Social Club member said. "Then we have a committee who goes over everything."
The club raises the scholarship funds by collecting membership dues and holding fundraisers throughout the year, including public Bingo games. The amount varies each year depending on revenues and how much the club has been able to raise.
Past recipients include Whitney Armstrong, a Morehouse Parish graduate, who returned to her hometown and now teaches at Morehouse Jr. High School.
