  • While many mothers can say they watched their daughter receive her diploma, far fewer actually share the experience with their child.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, Christina Smith and her daughter Marilyn Blount both received degrees from McNeese State University. A happy coincidence — both experienced scheduling problems — led to the the two sharing the same graduation date.
Smith graduated with a Bachelor in General Studies Arts and Humanities with a minor in History. She began pursuing a degree in education 11 years ago, but as so often happens, life intervened. She said she is now considering pursuing a Master of Arts in teaching.
Blount, a 2009 graduate from Sam Houston High School, graduated cum laude from the College of Liberal Arts with a bachelor's degree in Art Education and a minor in Psychology.
Blount is moving to New Orleans to teach English and Language Arts to high-risk middle school students. The petite 21-year-old is will be accompanied by her 110-lb St. Bernard Leia.
"I was lucky enough to student teach with Ms. Donald at Oak Park Middle," said Blount. "That really solidified my wanting to go to an at-risk school."
Smith said both of her children are leaving the nest at the same time. Her son Hayden, 19, has joined the Marine Corps.
"I'm okay with it," Smith said, "Even though it is a little far."
Blount and Smith still have some time together. The two are vacationing with Smith's mother and Blount's grandmother Dianne Dronet.
