  • During the late evening hours of Dec. 21, a Gonzales Officer on criminal patrol passing thru east bank shopping center at the corner of La. 44 and La. 30 was flagged down by two employees of La Mexicana Restaurant. The employees informed the officer of a shooting which had just occurred inside the restaurant. Gonzales Patrol Officers discovered three gunshot wounded victims without life threating injuries outside of the restaurant. One of the gunshot victims identified as Macaria Torres Hernandez was transported to the St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. None of the five people currently detained were forthcoming with details to what had actually happened inside the restaurant, besides alluding to there was a fight between six people claiming to be employees of the restaurant and two patrons that had gotten out of hand. Officers quickly determined three more Hispanic males were inside of the restaurant which had locked themselves inside of the establishment and refused to exit at officer’s request. A perimeter around the restaurant was secured and the Gonzales Special Operations team called to the location, along with investigators. After several hours of communication between officers and the three parties inside, one of which was said to be armed, Officers were able to successfully negotiate the surrender of the three subjects by having them walk out of the business on their own accord. A subsequent search warrant of the business resulted in the recovery of a stolen .357 pistol believed to be used in the shooting. Officers were able to establish that all eight people two hispanic females and six hispanic males were illegal aliens. One of which has been deported previously. Assisting agencies comprised of Immigration, Customs, Border Patrol, Louisiana State Police, and Ascension Parish Sheriff were instrumental in helping bring this incident to a peaceful conclusion. Additional charges are pending from Immigration and Customs enforcement Agency. All eight subjects were arrested on a plethora of charges and booked into Ascension Parish Jail on the morning of 12/22/2013.
