  • It’s bonfire time in St. James Parish so be prepared to see the most unique custom-built bonfire around. On Dec. 24 at the levee in Convent at 6 p.m. will be the first Plantation Replica Bonfire event. In the spirit of both keeping the bonfire tradition alive and remembering the days of old, a local Convent businessman has constructed a replica of Welham Plantation, which was torn down in the late 1970’s, to the dismay of preservationists and residents alike. The grand mansion, which had stood so proudly since the 1800’s, was gone in an instant, leaving only memories of the beautiful estate behind. The Welham replica will be burned on Christmas Eve along with the other bonfires on the levee, with hopes of helping to light the way for Papa Noel to safely visit the children of beautiful St. James Parish. Address: 6554 Highway 44, Convent, Louisiana Bonfire is located across River Road from historic St. Michael Church and Poche Plantation. Contact Shelby Kliebert for more information at 225-206-4208.
