A former Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office deputy has been booked into the Morehouse Parish Jail on charges relating to seized drug assets that were never deposited. Chris Balsamo, 40, was charged with unauthorized use of a moveable over $10,000 following an investigation conducted by Louisiana State Police at the request of Morehouse Parish Sheriff Mike Tubbs. Court records filed in connection with the case state that in October Tubbs requested LSP's Criminal Investigation Division investigate nearly $18,000 in cash seized as evidence in criminal cases while Balsamo, a lieutenant with the MPSO, was director of the North Louisiana Drug Enforcement Bureau. Senior Trooper Scott Brown, who conducted the investigation, spoke with Balsamo on Nov. 1, who confessed to taking $17,788 from the vault, money seized in two separate cases conducted by the NLDEB. The arrest affidavit states the “ … investigation revealed that Balsamo attempted to borrow money to put back into the evidence vault.” Balsamo, who made restitution of the missing funds prior to his arrest, was released on a $2,500 bond, signed by 4th District Court Judge Scott Leehy.
